THE DESIGNERS- NOVEMBER 09

Below you will find further information on the designers from our Valmont November Catwalk show which included Helena Carrizosa, Talisa Qi, Mary Gresham and Charlotte Simpson.

HELENA CARRIZOSA www.helenacarrizosa.com

Helena Carrizosa is a pioneer of individuality. Her exotic Colombian and Italian roots ensure her designs are independent, eclectic and exciting.

Time spent both studying and working in Bogot, Paris and London, ensures her collections are a heady combination of multi-functional, exclusive and unusual pieces. Helenas ethos its all in the CONCEPT. Strictly one-off pieces, her designs promote the concept of identity. Without any trace of following the fashion pack, Helenas comfort zone is found in experimenting and contrasting different styles and techniques.

TALISA QI :
Website: : www.talisaqi.com
Talisa Qi (pronounced "Chi") comes from a fashion family in southern China, famous from leatherware and fine furs. On arriving in England she realised that there was a great passion for customized, high quality fashion that would break away from the mass market, and provide individuals with the clothing and accessories to live a more exciting and luxurious life.

Talisa Qi is a new breed of couturier, enabled by combining her flair for design and understanding her client, together with the opportunity for fast, high quality manufacture in China at low cost. Unlike the couture houses in Paris, which are restricted to using expensive workers in France, Talisa is free to concentrate on her designs and the needs of her customer - without the restrictions of high costs.

Talisa is creating a select network of agents to market and supply her line of clothing. By cutting out expensive distribution channels and marketing budgets she believes that her designs can bring pleasure to a wider range of people than a typical small designer.

While her business is based in China, and she has customers in the USA and France, her main passion is for the UK where she finds a great deal of energy, individualism and imagination that is well suited to her creativity.

Each of her items will be a limited edition, typically of no more than ten items, sold around the world, so her creativity can be focussed where she wants - on specific clients - rather than having to please a mass volume market.

MARY GRESHAM
mary.i.gresham@googlemail.com

Mary Gresham gained a B.A Hons in Printed Textiles at West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1995. Prior to this Mary worked for three companies specialising in Interior Decoration thus her passion for fabrics became prevalent and her enquiry in to further practical Research of Textiles.

Mary's passion is creating beautiful feminine clothes she goes to great lengths to seek out sumptuous fabrics and trimmings and in so doing creating unique and original designs i.e.' The Pistachio Silk dress, which can only be described as utterly feminine draped in pearls, flowers, beads and feathers.'

Mary Gresham is currently designing a collection of garments with a classical feel yet carefully choosing rich tactile fabrics sensitively enhancing the finished garment i.e. A beautiful day coat in creamy gold linen with a shot of metallic gold thread running through the fabric embellished with cream embroidered leaves. As well as her fashion range Mary designs fashion and Interior accessories to complement her clothing range.

' Each re-creation is a unique work of art, lovingly embellished with flowers, feathers, jewels and beads, fine antique lace, chiffon and silks, dresses perfect for weddings and parties, coats to die for, or as a gift to admire and adore.' As well as wearing her own designs Mary chooses carefully when buying for herself and is likely to be found in a boutique or rummaging in a pile of fabrics in an antique shop. Mary is not a lover of high Street Fashion which she feels promotes a "Clone society" targeting the masses and not the individual. Mary speaks to many women of various age groups who feel disillusioned by what little there is on offer in the high street together with what they describe as a limiting choice. It is Mary's ambition to open her own high street fashion range that offers a range of clothes for everyone where women of all ages can feel feminine and feel good.

With regard to the garments she re-creates she exclaims, "The joy of wearing a garment that someone in history has worn for a particular occasion is a way of celebrating them and their heritage and in imagining what sort of character they were and honouring them as individuals."

Charlotte Simpson is a BA (hons) Fashion graduate from Northumbria University and winner of the Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textiles Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2009.

The inspiration for Charlottes final collection was triggered by a trip to Istanbul where she researched Turkish arts, architecture and specifically Iznic ceramic tiles. Charlotte has created her own fabrics influenced by the shapes from her research and repeating them into a pattern by appliqu and printing onto garments. The collection is bold and bright creating 3D geometric structures with the use of leathers, suedes, silks, wools and neoprene.

During her studies Charlotte gained experience working with Donna Karan, Julien Macdonald and Amanda Wakeley and Olivia Rubin.
