Kikis launch collection is a unique series of beautifully designed and impeccably detailed clutch bags. Her work is influenced by her Japanese origins and international life experiences which were gained from living in Southern California and more recently in the UK where she is now launching her label. Each bag is hand made in the UK, and along with the finest hides Kiki uses vintage Kimono fabrics for the limited edition versions of her designs. Kiki will be exhibiting her impeccable bags at the A La Mode International Show during London Fashion Week in February 2010. We caught up with the designer herself to find out more about this exciting new brand!
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I am from Japan originally but spent 6 years from the age of 18 in southern California before returning to Japan where I began my training in handbag design and manufacture. This was continued in London, where I now live, at the London College of Fashion. Following that I spent time enhancing my skills by working with a London based designer and a high quality leather goods manufacture that I work with closely today.
What inspired you to launch your own range?
I was always into design as my family are involved in various design fields. My dad is a landscape architect and I grew up seeing my dad working in his own studio. I didn't expect to design handbags but I always knew I would work for myself in the future. Since the day I realised this is what I wanted to do, it has been 6 years and I am now at the stage where I am ready to launch my first collection.
How would you describe your collection?
My launch collection is a unique collection of beautifully designed and impeccably detailed clutch bags that draw on my Japanese origins and international life experiences. My design influences draw from many places but my style could be best described as a fusion of East and West. For example my favourite period in Japanese history is called the Meiji Period (1868-1912) which was best known for when Japan embraced the West and a fusion of different worlds began. Fashion, architecture, design and contemporary culture, both from the East and the West, are all starting points for my inspiration. But I think it is the way I translate these with Japanese qualities such as balance, simplicity, quality, and joy of use that sets my work apart.
If you could choose any celebrity in the world to wear your pieces who would you select and why?
I like Thandie Newton. I like how she looks and dresses so I would be happy to see my clutch bag on her. But really my favorite celebrities since I was little are Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. I love their classy and elegant look.
Where can we purchase your collection pieces?
Currently on line, looking for stockists at the moment.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love going to the cafe, that is my favorite my own time. I will be checking magazines or staring out of the window.
